The monochromatic red and infrared light of the LEDs causes photochemical reactions in cells that are achieved neither by sunlight nor by lamp light. The Medical Academy of Volgograd, a state institution in Russia, managed to prove the effectiveness of intravenous light therapy by successfully treating chronic liver disorders with this method. How does red light work to treat illnesses? How does the red light cure? The diverse biochemical effect mechanisms on cellular and sub-cellular level are in part quite well investigated. Red light is for example capable of influencing the secretion of different substances, like the endorphin and prostaglandin (hormone-like substances which work dilate vessels and activate labour pain) which, influences the levels of pain.

Red light irradiation stimulates the enzymes of the anti-oxide protection. In addition red light irradiation causes an increase of the glutathion peroxidase- production in the liver and supports so the immune system. Red light stimulates the formation of ATP, a molecule that accounts for the fuel and energy stock of the cell. One has also found out that the calcium-ion-balance of the cells is influenced in a positive way.

Red light regulates oxidative processes, which increase the cell's metabolism and raises the synthesis of collagen in the fibroblasts. It also raises the action potential in the nerve cells and it stimulates the formation of DNA and RNA in the nucleus and the mitochondria of leukocytes. Clinical and experimental experiences show that red light has the greatest effect on tissues and/or organs that show a generally worsened conditions for example with patients who suffer from malfunction or from tissue damage. Red light has the greatest depth of penetration within the optically visible wavelengths.

Based on the findings of the Russian space flight medicine, the ProtoLight system uses red and infrared light modulated by Proton resonance frequencies.

By orders of GSRI, the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Biophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences at the Pushchino Scientific Centre has tested procedures of Proton-Resonance-Regulation. From 2005 till 2007 the effect of Proton resonance modulated red and infrared light was documented on living matter (cell biological study).

The cell biological study has arrived to following conclusions: Following an application, the regenerative ability of tissue increases (duration of treatment 10 minutes). The application works also in a preventive manner.
